The New Ansel Adams Photography Series - three related volumes

The Camera - Ansel Adams

Perhaps surprisingly for an author so committed to large-format work, Adams also deals comprehensively with 35mm and medium-format cameras, as well as light-meters and accessories. He provides a reliable and thorough guide to the equipment and its best use. As with the other two books he emphasises the tools employed, not as ends in themselves, but as means to achieve what the photo-grapher visualises.

The Portfolios of Ansel Adams

Introduction by John Szarkowski

From 1948 to 1976 Ansel Adams produced seven portfolios, each a limited edition of from ten to fifteen signed photographic prints. This book reproduces all ninety of these images, including many of Adams' most famous landscape photographs, and less familiar, although remarkable portraits and architectural studies. User laser scanning, the book was reconstructed in 1981, and as with all the Adams collection published by Little-Brown the print quality is magnificent, and as faithful as possible to the original prints.

The Ansel Adams Guide - Basic Techniques of Photography - BOOK 1

John P. Schaefer

An unfinished Ansel Adams project brought to completion by John P Schaefer, this distills the essential Adams series down into a single volume suitable for the novice. The style and reproduction is similar to the classic ‘Ansel Adams Photography Series’ of books, and this volume follows the outline of those texts, and draws upon some of the illustrative material therin. It is intended to give the motivated novice photographer an understanding of the basic thought processes and skills that Ansel Adams used to make fine photographs. As proficiency increases, the 'New Series' could be consulted for more detailed information.

The text has been organised to provide the beginner with all the information necessary for an understanding of basic photographic principles and how to apply them in the field and the darkroom. A number of Adams pictures have been included for illustrative purposes, along with explanations of how they were made; among these are 21 'interludes' which appear throughout the book as special double page spreads, each featuring one of Adam's pictures and a description of of photographic principle or technique used in creating it. 'Basic Techniques' also includes 2 chapters on colour photography.

The ZONE SYSTEM for 35mm PHOTOGRAPHERS

Carson Graves

Most texts are written purely from the point of the sheet or at least roll film photographer who is geared up to dedicate an entire film to a subject. Graves shows photographers how to apply the principles and procedures of the zone system to both black and white and colour photography. Although termed '35mm' the book is aimed squarely at users of film in roll form generally, and is a good primer even for beginners who want to get to grips with controlling exposure and processing.
