TRADITIONAL MONOCHROME

Advanced Black and White Photography

KODAK

One of the Kodak Workshop publications, this gets quite a bit of information about black and white into 100 npages, albeit from the Kodak point of view - irritating that although reprinted in 2000, about half the Kodak products mentioned have been deleted. With a budget of £12.95 it is worth having, going higher than that a book like 'Ansel Adams Basic Techniques' would be a better investment.

Creative Elements

Eddie Ephraums

An enduring book, in which Eddie pushed the boat out in producing a well crafted book which probes deeply into the visualisation, camera-work and printing of his admittedly romantic style. A number of images are taken from conception to final print, and later chapters investigate areas such as print materials, archival processing and presentation. Eddie is commissioning editor for Aurum books, and also the author of 'Gradient Light' and 'I was Monty's Treble'.

Larry Bartlett's Black & White Photographic Printing Workshop

Larry Bartlett & Jon Tarrant

Written as a joint project with Jon Tarrant, and published before his untimely death, this is a book on photographic printing from the point of view of the best of the traditional Fleet Street darkroom men. Now that news imagery is 'printed' via electronic systems, this book will come to be seen as the record of a passing skill and art form.

John Garrett's Black & White Photography Masterclass

John Garrett

John Garratt brings his 30 years experience working on assignment for Time, Paris Match and The Sunday Times to bear on the techniques he uses. A book for those who like to work down the traditional road, and still want their pictures to be made of real silver grains.

The World of Lith Printing
Tim Rudman

Since The Master Photographer's Lith Printing Course was released, there have been significant changes and developments in the world of Lith printing - materials and techniques for 'traditional' lith printing have come and gone, and new digital methods have been introduced, which either simulate the process or in other ways further expand its creative potential. Tim's original work is still highly relevant today, but the field has moved on considerably and a vacuum has been created in the published knowledge available.
Tim's new book, The World of Lith Printing, was conceived to be the ultimate companion to his original work by tackling these new developments and bringing the Lith printing community up to date with techniques, materials and references. This new book is not an updated version of the Master Photographers Lith Printing Course... it's a companion to it. It is also about bringing the Lith printing community together.

Normally retailing for £45, we have an introductory offer of £25.00 for a limited time.

The Master Photographers Toning Course
Tim Rudman
*** out of print ***

Tim Rudman took it unto himself to write a definitive book on chemical toning techniques, and must be congratulated on the result. Years in the research and writing, a new book on toning techniques was long overdue, and it is unlikely that another photographer/printer/writer will flog themselves along this tortuous road again. Exhaustive in its thoroughness, it is still highly practical, and minimises chemical theory, concentrating on a 'recipe' approach to the chemistry of toning. Apart from the classical toners such as sepia and selenium, less well known methods such as thiourea dioxide toning and the use of chromogenic toners are covered, as well as aspects of toning for permanence.

Post Exposure

Ctein

Wide ranging book, addressing many issues that other texts never touch on. It could be considered complementary to Richard J. Henry’s ‘Controls in B&W Photography’, (now out of print), and offers up a distillation of 30 years working and teaching photography. Particularly good on specialist colour printing techniques.

Night Photography  *** out of print ***

Something of a first, rather than a picture book using night photography, of which there have been many, this addresses the technicalities of working in very low available light. A greater range of subject matter would have benefited the book - although profusely illustrated, the majority of pictures are rural or edge of town subjects.

The Variable Contrast Printing Manual

Steve Anchell

In some ways a similar reference to ‘Film Dev. Cookbook’, a lot of bits and pieces relating to the topic in hand gathered together. It puts together all that most people would want to know about VC papers, albeit written from the American point of view. Particularly useful are contrast comparison charts, showing the range and grade spacing of all the papers.

Way Beyond Monochrome

Ralph W Lambrecht & Chris Woodhouse

The subheading is 'Advanced Techniques for better Black & White Photography & Printing Plus Digital', and the book certainly delivers, containing a vast resource of technical material together with hundreds of illustrations. Written as a series of essays combined with practical assignments, it is aimed at advanced amateur and semi-professional photographers who want to improve negative and print quality. Particularly strong on graphical presentation, there is hardly a page without a graph or diagram relating to sensitometry, densitometry, or tonal conversion.

Elements
the making of fine monochrome prints

Barry Thornton
*** out of print ***

Barry Thornton's first book, and unlikely to to go out of fashion or print, as it deals with classic landscape subject matter, and traditional full tonal treatment of it. After a technical preface, the bulk of the book is built around 45 images, and the techniques used to photograph and print them. Most images are landscape, many using the involvement of heavy man-made intrusions. Not primarily a zone-system book, but one isn't allowed to forget about it, and the book is aimed mainly at the roll film camera user - 35mm gets a separate look-in as an appendix.

The Master Printer's
a professional guide to b+w darkroom techniques

Steve Macleod

Not to be confused with any of Tim Rudmans series, this deals with the traditional darkroom from the point of view of the professional monochrome hand printer, now an endangered species. To some eyes the design might get in the way of the message, presenting a visual blitz rather like watching Sky News. However the book does convey lucidly the techniques of the latter-day London pro. darkroom, and through client examples the 'glamour profession' atmosphere that permeates certain echelons of it.
