The Photographers Handbook

John Hedgecoe

Originally out in 1977, and even if some of the shots do go back to '60's colour supplements, the rejigged Handbook is now a photographic institution, the incredibly busy pages stuffed with topics, images and diagrams covering, or at any rate, touching on, virtually everything in the photographic firmament. If you have to give a novice one book to start them off, this is the one.

Photographs that sell and sell

Gerry Kopelow

The thrust of the book is maximising income through selling images through libraries and agencies. Guidance towards the most commercially successful images to aim for, how to assess a potential image, and how to achieve a professional quality shot.

Photography and the Performing Arts

Gerry Kopelow

Written by a Canadian photographer, this book details the market for photography within the performing arts, covering topics including types of imaging used in advertising and promotion, how to work with performers, and contacts for marketing. An excellent approach does however bear the dead hand of Focal Press's budgeting department - all illustrations are poor monochrome, apart from one small insert of colour, and the design is more suited to textbook than creative manual. All examples are taken from Canadian productions.

Seeing Landscapes
the creative process behind great photographs

Charlie Waite

A full colour illustrated guide to landscape from a dedicated master of the genre. He could'a squeezed in some black and white, but that's probably reserved for a later tome. Particularly interesting are the variations, comparative images taken with variations in lighting, or taken at different times, one pair of Rannoch moor having a 15 year separation, although with the same viewpoint, camera and film. Travel locations feature strongly, Dordogne, Tuscany, Provence and Andelusia to mention a few, although there are some UK images.

The Making of Landscape Photographs

Charlie Waite

Charlie Waites earlier book, again exclusively colour orientated. The process of photographing in the landscape is broken down into a dozen or so areas, including lenses, light, sky, water, buildings, etc, and a number of his images are then used within each section to dissect the topic.

Travel & Vacation Photography

Michel Busselle

Black and white landscape doesn't get a look in here, a full colour popular treatment, most suited to stimulating one to getting the best out of holiday pictures. Each topic is broken down into sections Seeing, Thinking and Acting, which combined with considerable licence in typeface will either appeal to one for its free-ranging approach, or make you want to hurl the book across the room. It does, though, work extremely well as a tune-up course in getting the best out of landscape images as they present themselves.

Landscape Photography

Michel Busselle

Using the same slightly mad text scheme as his travel and location book, this is a good inspirational book for anyone starting to look seriously at landscape work in colour - b&w doesn't get a look in. Divided into 4 general areas: the subject; the art of composition; light and the image; cameras & equipment.
