BROWN TONERS

Also a valuable protective agent for archival treatment, and can be used as a superior alternative to selenium toner for this purpose. Polysulphide toners convert silver to silver sulphide very rapidly, in tests Viradon has been found to convert 65-75% of the silver image within 30 seconds. This is not dependent on density, so will not 'split' like selenium. The protective mechanism is present even if the stage of colour shift is not reached, and a time of one minute in Viradon at 1+50 can be considered a satisfactory permanising treatment.

See section 9 in the news pages, also the link below which gives a submenu containing links to various sources of more information re. polysulphide.

Agfa VIRADON

Single solution brown toner based on potassium sulphide, which does not use bleaching. The toner works progressively, gradually converting the image into silver sulphide. Consequently the image will remain a more restrained 'dark chocolate' brown, rather than the more ginger tones that a bleach & tone sepia toner may produce. Most suitable for chloro-bromide papers, colour change on bromide & RC papers is likely to be weak. Supplied as a 125ml bottle of liquid concentrate, Viradon dilutes 1+50.
