BLUE TONERS

Commercially made blue toners fall into two basic types; those based on ammonium ferric citrate, and those that use a mix of other iron salts to achieve the same effect. In all cases the same Prussian blue dye compound is formed, although you may prefer the action of one make over another after testing different types. If a particularly subtle blue is required, or archival aspects are important, possibly look at gold toning (without initial sepia). Otherwise, if you are mixing blue toner from recipe, the substitution of a mild acid (such as tartaric acid) for hydrochloric acid may have the desired effect. Alternatively, the new Speedibrews 'Porcelain' Blue toner provides another option. Always try to use blue toners as fresh as possible - staining of the highlights is the principal problem, and usually indicates stale stock solutions or working solution on its last legs. The Prussian Blue dye compound is soluble in alkaline solutions, which includes tap water, and will tend to reduce on washing.

Speedibrews PORCELAIN BLUE TONER

New formulation, a 2-part blue toner yielding a restrained blue. This is a completely new type of toner, and adds a new hue to the monochrome workers armoury. The separate bleach stage gives much more control than the traditional single bath brews. Each litre of freshly mixed bleach and toner processes at least the equivalent of 12 low key or 20 high key A4 prints. Porcelain Blue is more light stable than the coventional Prussian Blue.
