EPSON INKJET PAPERS

A major brand leader in papers, unsurprisingly, as Epson is the dominant supplier of desktop inkjet printers. The media are excellent at ink reception, although for 'fine art' photographic work heavier weights and a greater choice of surfaces from other manufacturers may be preferable.


EPSON PHOTO QUALITY INKJET PAPER

The basic lightweight paper in Epsons range, a high brightness cast-coated paper with a 102 gsm weight. Surface is a smooth dead matt, similar to Tetenal 'Perfect Print' paper. Probably best used for proofing. The sharpness is high, although if prints are to be exhibited the very light weight demands their mounting. For portfolio use it might look a bit on the mean side, and a higher budget paper would be better.

EPSON PHOTO QUALITY GLOSSY PAPER

The entry level for a glossy paper in the Epson range, this is a 141 gsm paper with a relatively high gloss, similar to an RC gloss finish. Not particularly robust, for a seriously photographic gloss feel the 194 gsm 'Epson Photo' may be preferable.

This has a robust 194 gsm weight, and is the entry level choice in the Epson range if a photo realistic gloss print is required. ISO brightess is 89, and opacity is 96%.

EPSON PREMIUM GLOSSY PHOTO PAPER

A base weight of 255 gsm, opacity of 96%, and an ISO brightness of 93%. A smoother gloss than 'Epson Photo Paper', with marginally less brightness, general feel similar to a conventional RC paper. Aimed at dye printers, Epson claim a 10 year+ image life when used with their own inksets.

EPSON PREMIUM SEMIGLOSS PHOTO PAPER

Base weight 251 gsm, this fits in alongside 'Premium Glossy' as one of Epsons top papers, and aimed at both dye and pigment printers. Similar finish to a conventional semi-matt RC paper, such as Polywarmtone RC semi-matt or Ilford MG satin surface. Rapid drying and enhanced water fastness make it a popular paper for good photo reproduction. As with Epson Premium Glossy, it has a slightly off-white base colour.

EPSON MATTE HEAVYWEIGHT PAPER

A competitively priced workhorse of a paper with a 167 gsm weight, not quite as heavy as the Forte 'Special Matt' but a very similar surface. Comparing it to conventional papers, the closest finish would be Ilford FB matt (5K).

EPSON ARCHIVAL MATTE PAPER

Aimed by Epson exclusively at pigment printer use, surface generally similar to 'Epson Matte Paper Heavyweight' but with a heavier 192 gsm weight, and higher brightness of ISO 104%. Not especially robust, finished prints need mounting or sleeving. Opacity is 94%, so not especially dense either.

Moderately textured watercolour paper, 190 gsm, 96% opacity and ISO brightness of 89%. This a relatively light weight and heavy texture for photo realistic work - maybe also look at Hahnemuhle Photo Rag & German Etching, or equivalents in the Lyson and Permajet ranges.
